The city of Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) is situated at the mouth of the Ulhas River on the west coast of India and is its richest and most heavily populated city, as it offers a high standard of living. It houses Bollywood, India's Hindi and Marathi film and television industry and is the entertainment and commercial capital of the country. It was built on a former archipelago of seven islands. The city is mostly low lying, with a hilly area in the north. It has a tropical climate. National Highways 3, 4 and 8 serve the city and public transport includes rail, buses, taxis, auto rickshaws and ferries. There are two ports in Mumbai and the airport is the Chhatrapati Shivaji International. For tourists wanting to find the best Mumbai hotels, the choice is wide.

Rooms come in many different sizes, such as singles, doubles, family rooms and executive suites. Families may request an extra bed or crib for a small child at a nominal charge. A children's playground, children's activity programs and child minding facilities keep the little ones entertained. Rooms have air conditioning and en suite bathrooms, often done in marble with power showers, bath tubs with jets, hair dryers and shavers, bath robes, slippers and toiletries. An LCD television with cable network, a DVD and a CD player offers entertainment in the room. Many rooms have private balconies with stunning natural views and soundproof rooms. A safe deposit box, mini bar and tea and coffee making facilities mostly come as standards. Luxury bed linen, pillow menus and special mattresses are often available. Some of the best Mumbai hotels have more than one pool, of which one is a children's pool. One will also find a sauna, massage room, gymnasium, beauty salon and duty free shop. Other amenities include a car rental desk, translation services, currency exchange and an ATM machine.

Many hotels are situated in the city center, making them ideal for business persons who are then within easy walking distance of business parks and public transport. Rooms contain a work station with business stationery and internet-connected personal computer. Room telephones have direct dialing lines and voicemail or answering service. Guests may also request a wake up call. Newspapers are delivered free of charge to the room with breakfast and housekeeping services keep the business person's room tidy. Laundry, dry cleaning and ironing facilities are available. A business center on the premises includes photocopying, fax and audio visual equipment and often secretarial or personal assistant services. Conference venues are varied and adaptable and Events Planners on the staff organize every detail of the meeting or conference. Shuttle services transport guests to the airport regularly.

Restaurants in the best Mumbai hotels offer a wide variety of cuisine. Chinese, Mediterranean, Italian, vegetarian and Japanese foods are all popular, as is the local cuisine. Vada Pay is one of the best known local specialties - a spicy potato patty. Pani Puri is puffed puris filled with sprouts and potatoes. Famous local desserts include Shrikhand and Puran Poli. Foster's Beer is widely consumed, as are fruit juices in exotic flavors such as mango and lychee. Bottled water is also very popular and readily available.

There are many things to do and see in and around Mumbai. The world's largest IMAX dome theater is in Wadala. The Jehangir Art Gallery and National Gallery of Modern Art both contain impressive art collections. Jijamata Udvaan is the city zoo. The Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contain Shaivistic statues hewn from rock. Juhu Beach will supply a day of fun in the sun and Essel World theme park and amusement center will entertain the whole family.

The city has many annual events and festivals of note. The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival in February includes music, dance, theater and film. The Elephanta Festival of Indian classical dance is held in March at the Elephanta Caves. May 1 is Maharashtra Independence Day. August sees Nag Panchami (Snake Day) and in September Krishna's birthday is celebrated. The very important Diwali or Deepavali (The Festival of Lights) is celebrated with the lighting of lamps at around October. The Mumbai Film Festival runs in October as well, featuring films from around the world and showcasing local Indian talent. In December Mumbai's Jazz Utsav has an eclectic program of jazz. The Mumbai Marathon in January attracts many international contestants. Mumbai is truly a potpourri city for every visitor.
